Table: Medicare Spending Per Beneficiary

In the table below, the “actual” column shows 2008 Medicare spending on the average beneficiary who lived in that region’s hospital market. The “adjusted” column is CMS’s analysis of average beneficiary spending after Medicare’s extra payments – for higher local wages and academic medical centers, for instance – are removed and the sickness level of patients is accounted for.

The national average “actual” spending per beneficiary was $9,103. The corresponding “adjusted” average was $7,500. (Source: U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services)
