The Players

The PlayersREP. TOM PRICE, R-GA.
CHAIRMAN, HOUSE REPUBLICAN STUDY COMMITTEE

Date of Birth: Oct. 8, 1954.

Education: B.A. and M.D., University of Michigan.

Career Path: Price had a private orthopedic surgery practice for 20 years before moving to teach at Emory University School of Medicine. Price was elected to the Georgia State Senate in 1996 and to the U.S. House in 2004.

Role in Health Care Reform, 1993-1994: None.

Why He’s a Player Now: Though relatively new to Congress, Price, a doctor, has established himself as a GOP leader on health reform. He introduced the Comprehensive Health Coverage and Reform Enhancement Act in 2007 that would create tax credits and deductions for “qualified” health insurance and other changes to encourage consumer-directed health care.

Quote: “As a conservative and a physician, I call on my party to transform our terribly broken health care system by making it patient-centered. Our perceived reluctance to address the issue has left many Americans without a basic understanding even of what a conservative approach to health care looks like.” (Washington Times, April 1, 2009)
